Motor oil is used as a multi-purpose lubricant in vehicle engines and comprises a mineral or synthetic base oil with several additives. The active ingredients are added to the base oil to protect the engine under use and enhance engine performance. Car engines, for example, require an oil which can perform equally well on short, low temperature trips as well as long, high temperature journeys.

Subsequent analysis of the chemical and physical properties of the oil, both in the lab and in field trials, provides a measure of the effectiveness of the oil, and also determines the level of interaction between the additives.|

When using a magnetic stir bar for mixing components in the formulation process, the magnetic field from the stir bar can interfere with the weighing result and repeatability is poor. The Magnetic Protection Shield Weighing Pan (MPS) effectively protects the small platform balances against magnetic influence. The existing weighing pan simply lifts off and is replaced by the MPS.
