Don’t Stop the Train for Accurate Weight Readings

Weigh In MotionTaking accurate weight readings of rail cars while they are moving can be advantageous to many operations. Coupled-In-Motion (CIM) systems can be customized to streamline railcar weighing and data management. With an accurate system, even legal-for-trade readings can be achieved.

Highway-based Weigh-In-Motion systems have created huge advantages for high volume truck traffic applications. Authorities are now able to monitor trucks for weight compliance without requiring them to stop. The same type of system can also be advantageous to rail applications, allowing users to monitor railcar overloads and total train weights while the train is moving at speeds of up to 6mph (10kph).

Static rail weighing often requires railcars to be uncoupled and directed to a special weighing area. With a CIM system, cars can remain completely coupled. The scale can also be incorporated into a normal length of track, limiting the need for time-consuming redirection and positioning of railcars.

Accuracy and Versatility
METTLER TOLEDO’s In-motion weighing terminals support numerous hardware configurations. This can include “dual draft” weighing of each axle set on a single platform, or for “single draft” weighing of both axle sets at once. This provides the ability to achieve legal-for-trade weighing accuracy.

Special hardware also allows for completely automated weighing to take place. This is initiated by sensory equipment and RFID tags on the approaching train. Data can be automatically reported in real time, or stored for later retrieval.

Built to Order
With many options available, a system can be customized to meet the specific needs of your operation. In fact, all rail weighing systems provided by METTLER TOLDEO are built to order. Each scale is designed and built to high engineering and manufacturing specifications, with the customer’s needs in mind at every step. The result is a lasting scale system that helps rail applications operate more efficiently.
