Dynamic Checkweighing Assures Quality of Packaged Tomatoes

Reliable and cost-effective dynamic weight checking at Heiko Hagdorn e. K.: The fact that checkweighers already make a significant contribution to quality control measures in small plants highlights the benefits gained there from the Garvens XC checkweigher.
The Garvens XC provides low-cost, compact, reliable weighing technology and thus ensures accurate weight checking of the aromatic tomatoes grown by Heiko Hagdorn. Their tomatoes are harvested between the months of March and October in Hochdorf, close to the German city of Stuttgart. In a modern 40,000 m² greenhouse, Hagdorn cultivates vine tomatoes and cherry tomatoes for the retail sale throughout the region. In terms of the approach, the managing director, Heiko Hagdorn, pays particular attention to the natural and ecofriendly cultivation of tomatoes as well as to the highest level of quality and best possible taste.

"Tomatoes are only able to truly develop their own taste if they remain on the plant until they have fully ripened. Cultivation of this kind is only possible if the time between picking and delivery to the end consumer is kept to a minimum" explains manufacturer, Heiko Hagdorn. "Regional cultivation guarantees fully ripened fruits, an aromatic taste experience and minimal food miles to the end consumer", continues Hagdorn. Without chemical pest control and with state-of-the-art climate control, Heiko Hagdorn has been producing the popular solanum throughout the past year. Fungal diseases are prevented thanks to appropriate ventilation, while pests are controlled by means of beneficial organisms. Even the plants in the enclosed greenhouse are pollinated naturally by bee colonies.
The Garvens XC performs reliable weight checking
The ecofriendly cultivation of tomatoes is supported by the application of modern and efficient technologies. As such, Heiko Hagdorn puts his trust in weighing technology from METTLER TOLEDO along the entire packaging line of his aromatic tomatoes. An XC checkweigher ensures that each and every punnet of tomatoes contains the correct quantity. Over- or underfilled 270 gramme punnets are automatically ejected from the packaging line by means of a pusher and are subsequently corrected by hand. At Hagdorn Tomaten e.K., the checkweigher inspects up to 60 trays per minute and achieves an accuracy of one gram. With the Garvens XC, the weighed tomato punnets can be classified in up to three weight zones. The XC model is available in four checkweigher versions, with a weighing range of up to 3 kg or 6 kg. This checkweigher is characterised by its reasonable price thanks to strain gauge weighing cell technology and is easy to operate with its high-contrast colour display.
Strain gauge weighing cell technology for the strictest of requirements
The Garvens XC has been designed for simple, dynamic weighing tasks. The core element of the XC model is an analog weighing cell designed in accordance with the strain gauge principle (strain gauge weighing cell). A strain gauge weighing cell consists of a measuring body with affixed strain gauge. The role of the measuring body involves converting the weight force to be measured into a strain to be recorded by the strain gauge. The strain gauge technology enables reliable, dynamic checkweighing at an extremely attractive price/performance ratio.
