HACCP compliant solutions in IDB butter production plant

IDB Deutschland GmbH distributes Kerrygold butter made from the cream of Irish cow milk. To ensure high quality products, they installed a Garvens checkweigher to verify products are at their optimum weight and a Safeline AdvanCheK x-ray inspection system to check for contamination.
Ireland, the home of the Irish Dairy Board, IDB, is the ideal place for dairy production. Its vast green meadows, regular rainfall and mild climate is perfect for the grazing cows who produce fresh Irish cow milk. The milk is used to produce Kerrygold butter which is creamy in taste, naturally golden and has excellent spreadability.

A range of packaging
IDB Deutschland GmbH, established in 1973, distribute the Irish butter, Kerrygold, in a variety of sizes and types of packaging from their newly built production facility in Neukirchen-Vluyn, Germany. More than 35,000 tons of butter are produced by IDB Deutschland GmbH every year for food retailers in 250g, 200g and 125g units, in addition to larger deepfrozen portions for restaurants, hotels and catering services, sold under the brand name Kerrygold Catering.

Quality control
The high-quality Kerrygold products undergo strict quality checks in compliance with an extensive HACCP program. The QA system in place ensures that the production process is constantly monitored and checked. ‘High product quality is of great importance to us,’ emphasizes Michael Zachrau, Head of Quality Assurance and Environment, ‘since our products are wrapped in foil packaging we decided to go for x-ray inspection systems from METTLER TOLEDO’. More than 140 packs of butter are inspected for contamination every minute, on each one of four separate production lines. The x-ray inspection system AdvanCheK, allows for the reliable detection of foreign bodies such as pieces of glass, metal, stone and high-density plastic. Products which do not come up to the high quality standards of IDB Deutschland GmbH are automatically rejected.
Checkweighers ensure optimal weight
To ensure products are at the optimal weight, IDB uses Garvens S3 checkweighers to verify the correct amount of Kerrygold butter in each pack. Automatic rejection of underweight or overweight products provides both consumer protection and compliance with standards and regulations. The optional feedback control on the checkweighers automatically corrects the filling machines or portioning machines connected to the checkweigher to optimise the weight of every pack. This minimises product giveaway, reduces costs and provides a rapid return on investment. With Garvens checkweighers and Safeline’s x-ray equipment, METTLER TOLEDO allow IDB to confidently supply only quality products. The competencies of these two specialists do not only guarantee products with the latest technology but also offer a competent service support including installation and maintenance of the equipment.
